Canadian
Sport for Life
Canadian Sport for Life is a movement to increase sport's contribution
in Canadian society recognizing sport as an important part of everyone's
life by promoting each child's healthy and logical development in
a sport or physical activity.
Long-
Term Athlete Development
Long- Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is a seven stage Canadian
model that focuses on getting Canadians active for life. The model's
design begins development at chronologic age and maturity level
of Canadian youths.
The goal is
for athletes to progress through the LTAD experience training and
competition in programs that consider biological and training ages
in creating periodized plans specific to developmental needs.
Medical and
sport study research has found that our society is becoming increasingly
more at risk for obesity and other diseases related to low levels
of physical activity and poor nutrition habits.
To be successful,
an athlete development model such as LTAD requires highly skilled,
certified coaches who understand the stages of athlete development
and the various interventions that should be made. Each National
Sport Organization (NSO) is working towards applying the principles
of LTAD in a sport-specific environment. The NCCP multi-sport modules
have integrated the LTAD principles and ensure that coaches can
play a leadership role in bringing about the changes implied within
LTAD. To learn more about the LTAD model, please visit
